Our Story

Our story began in 1920, when Charles Kenyon Broadhurst returned from active service in the First World War and, with a loan from his wife’s mother, opened CK Broadhurst at 5–7 Market Street, Southport. What began as a modest venture has traded continuously ever since, becoming one of Britain’s oldest and most trusted second-hand and antiquarian bookshops.

Charles remained at the centre of the bookshop for over sixty years, becoming a well-respected figure within the trade and serving as President of the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association for the 1965–1966 term. When he passed away in 1987, the future of CK Broadhurst might easily have ended there.

Instead, its next chapter began in much the same modest way as the first. The shop was purchased by Laurie Hardman, who had begun working in the shop in 1969. His first responsibility was sweeping the floors. Laurie became the heart of CK Broadhurst for thirty-seven years. Known for his encyclopaedic knowledge of books and the warmth he brought to every encounter, he welcomed generations of readers through the doors, often sparking long conversations that showcased his love and passion for books.

Under Laurie’s stewardship, the bookshop grew from strength to strength, becoming a cultural fixture in Southport and a hub for collectors and enthusiasts. When he passed away in 2024, tributes from fellow booksellers, customers, and the wider community highlighted not only his contributions to the trade but also the many lives he had touched both in Southport and beyond.

Of the shop he loved, Laurie said:
"It’s a unique experience, coming into the place. It’s not just any old bookshop. We have customers who came in as children with their parents, and they have brought their children in, and they have brought their children in. We have a continuity that customers enjoy. A place like this must build up over time, but it has to grow organically."

Sadly, with Laurie’s passing came the end of an era, and the doors of 5–7 Market Street were forced to close. But the bookshop has never stopped trading. CK Broadhurst remains in family hands, and its trade, knowledge, and unique character have been carried online. Today, the shop continues to reach readers and collectors far beyond its original high-street home, bringing over a century of expertise, care, and continuity to book lovers across the world.
