A Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells: Book One, The Eastern Fells, Alfred Wainwright — First Edition (Third Impression)
Publication: Kendal, Henry Marshall, 1958
Formatting: Small 8vo, unpaginated.
Condition Report: Very Good. The binding remains tight and structurally sound, with the original dark green cloth boards and gilt lettering appearing exceptionally clean and remarkably bright for their age, showing only the faintest touches of rubbing to the rounded extremities. Internally, the text block is pleasingly fresh, with bright, unmarked pages that are free of foxing or significant age-toning, retaining the meticulous illustrations in crisp detail. The dust wrapper remains unclipped (retaining the original 12/6 price) and largely complete, but exhibits noticeable foxing, surface soiling, and light handling marks to the front panel, alongside minor age-toning to the spine and rear. The wrapper is now preserved within a removable protective sleeve.
Catalogue Note: This is an early and highly desirable impression of the author's seminal first guidebook. While the title page retains the original publication date, this copy exhibits the key bibliographical points of an early printing, most notably listing Book Two as "in preparation" and Books Three through Seven as "to follow, all being well." The volume correctly features the original rounded-corner cloth boards and the scarce early dust wrapper with the initial pricing intact on the front flap.
Profusely illustrated throughout with meticulous hand-drawn maps, panoramas, and sketches, the work captures the essence of the creator's artistic dedication. The guides were entirely handwritten and reproduced in pen and ink without any typeset material, offering a remarkably personal connection to the landscape.
Early print runs of this volume, especially those retaining their original, unlaminated dust wrappers, are increasingly scarce on the open market. While later, revised reprints are exceedingly common, finding one of the earliest issues with its original pricing and primary binding points is a wonderful opportunity for collectors of mountaineering and Lakeland topography.
A Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells, Book One: The Eastern Fells is the inaugural volume in a legendary seven-part series. Originally conceived as a "love letter" to the Lake District, the guidebook masterfully blends intricate hand-drawn maps, three-dimensional ascent routes, and charming illustrations with deeply personal and poetic prose. Covering the majestic fells between Ullswater and Thirlmere, including the popular ascents of Helvellyn, Fairfield, and Catstycam, this work revolutionised walking literature. Far more than a practical navigational tool, it is an enduring artistic masterpiece that has inspired generations of walkers to explore the rugged beauty of Lakeland.

Book Condition Guide
| Condition | Description |
|---|---|
| New | A brand-new, unread and professionally handled book. Carefully preserved from publication to purchase, these books are offered in the best attainable condition. This grade applies to recently published titles that have not entered long-term storage. |
| As New | The book is in pristine, original condition as if just published. No signs of use or handling. The dust jacket (if present) is equally flawless. This grade applies to any book that has remained untouched in storage for years. |
| Fine | The book is close to As New. It remains bright and attractive, but could show minor imperfections to the boards and/or dust jacket (if present). Its pages are typically clean and unmarked. |
| Near Fine | The book has a number of small flaws, i.e. slight rubbing to the edges, or tiny chips or creases to the dust jacket (if present). Its pages may have faint marks, or creases that are barely perceptible — nothing that detracts from their overall condition. |
| Very Good | The book maintains its structural integrity, and has no major flaws such as tears to its binding or pages. It may, however, show signs of careful use, handling, or storage — small marks and creases, light foxing. Its dust jacket (if present) remains fully intact, but small tears may be present. |
| Good | A book that remains intact and readable with complete text pages, but shows moderate signs of wear and use to both the book and dust jacket (if present). It may have noticeable creases, nicks, or stains, and the spine likely shows fading, bumping, and rubbing. There could be writing, underlining, and other marks on some pages, though the majority will be clean and tidy. |
| Fair | A book with significant wear or damage. The text pages will be complete, but there may be heavy underlining, highlighting and staining throughout, and the book’s endpapers, half-title, and copyright pages could be damaged or missing. The binding could be loose, and the dust jacket (if present) may have notable scuffs or tears. These copies are usually of interest for content, signature(s) or scarcity. |
| Poor | A heavily worn book whose value lies in its complete and legible text. A poor book will have substantial defects — loose joints or hinges, detached covers, loose and/or missing pages, and could be heavily soiled. A poor book is also known as a reading copy, and although compromised, can hold historical or bibliographic significance. |
