Condition Report: Very Good. The black cloth binding remains tight and square, with bright, unoxidised gilt lettering to the spine and minimal shelf-wear to the extremities. Internally, the text block is clean and firmly bound, though the top and fore-edges exhibit moderate foxing and toning. The front free endpaper bears a distinct, dark rectangular offset shadow, likely the result of a laid-in newspaper clipping, alongside mild age-toning throughout the margins. The unclipped dust jacket displays a bright and vibrant front panel with only minor edge-wear, faint creasing to the spine tips, and slight age-toning and light handling marks to the plain white rear panel.

Catalogue Note: This is the first UK edition of Roswell Ham Jr.'s debut novel, published by Neville Spearman Limited in 1953. The volume retains its striking original dust jacket, designed by the mid-century artist Guy Nicholls.

While copies of this novel occasionally surface on the secondary market, it is quite scarce to find one retaining its vibrant jacket in such well-preserved condition. Of note, Roswell Ham Jr. was the son of the President of Mount Holyoke College and the poet Helen Cornelius, adding an interesting biographical footnote to his literary debut.
