Condition Report: Very Good. The book remains firmly bound in its original blind-stamped publisher's cloth, exhibiting a pleasing, unoxidised brightness to the gilt tooling of the mounted Arab rider on the front board. The spine is heavily darkened with age, bearing rubbing and minor fraying to the head and tail, while the rear board displays evidence of historical dampstaining that has discolored the cloth without compromising the binding's structural integrity. The text block is solid, with expected dust-soiling to the page edges. Internally, the pages remain largely bright, punctuated by scattered foxing that is primarily confined to the preliminaries and title page. The large folding map is intact and carefully preserved at the front of the volume.

Catalogue Note: First Edition. Issued as part of the publisher's Illustrated London Library series, this volume is profusely illustrated with a detailed frontispiece, ten full-page engraved plates, and numerous in-text vignettes that capture the varied landscape and people of North Africa, supplemented by a large folding map.

The book retains a charming piece of educational provenance: a printed and inscribed prize bookplate on the front pastedown from Stutton Grove Academy, awarding the volume as a "Token of Merit" from teacher W. Starry to Master Matern in the midsummer of 1856. First editions in their original cloth bindings that successfully retain the fragile, often-lost folding map remain relatively scarce on the open market.
