Condition Report: Good. The original blue cloth boards remain relatively bright and square, adorned with unoxidised gilt imperial eagle motifs and vertical tooling to the front boards and spines. However, the extremities exhibit rubbing and fraying, particularly at the spine ends (top and tail) and the board corners. The bindings remain reasonably tight and sound, though some slight strain is characteristic of double-decker sets of this period. Internally, the text blocks are uniformly toned with age, and the top edges are somewhat darkened, but the pages appear cleanly kept. A previous ownership signature in dark ink is present on the front endpaper of the first volume. Overall, an attractive, unsophisticated set.

Catalogue Note: This handsome two-volume set represents the second UK edition of Leo Tolstoy’s magnum opus, Anna Karénina, translated by Nathan Haskell Dole. Preceded in English only by the 1886 American edition and the 1887 British Vizetelly edition, Dole’s translation was instrumental in introducing the Anglophone world to the Russian master’s work.

Bound in its striking original publisher’s blue cloth, this set features the Russian imperial double-headed eagle stamped in gilt on the front boards alongside elegant gilt bands. It bears an early provenance inscription to the front endpaper reading, "W. M. Edwards. Brynavel Cymla. Neath 5/11/22," situating the book in Neath, Wales, in the early 20th century. Original two-volume Walter Scott editions of this novel are increasingly scarce on the open market, particularly those that remain unsophisticated and in their original bindings.
