Condition Report: Fair. The original burgundy-red cloth binding remains intact but has suffered noticeable environmental exposure. Most prominently, a large, dark dampstain dominates the upper left quadrant of the front board, extending slightly over the joints and onto the spine. The cloth exhibits general fading and moderate shelf-wear, particularly at the spine ends, which are lightly frayed. Despite these external flaws, the gilt titling retains a readable lustre without excessive oxidation. Internally, the book is much stronger; the binding holds tightly without separation, and the pages remain largely bright, showing only minor, scattered foxing commensurate with age. The text block itself presents nicely and remains entirely readable.

Catalogue Note: Second edition of Swinburne's breakthrough work, issued by Moxon in a more accessible octavo format during the same year as the notoriously rare white-buckram quarto first edition.

The volume is unillustrated but features the contemporary ownership signature of "R. C. T. Bosanquet" neatly penned in ink to the upper right corner of the title page. While the second edition frequently appears on the open market compared to the elusive first edition, copies retaining their original 1865 cloth bindings without major modern restoration are becoming increasingly difficult to source.
