Black's Picturesque Guide to Wales North and South, & Monmouth-shire, Adam and Charles Black β 1870 Edition
Publication: Edinburgh, Adam and Charles Black; Chester, Catherall and Prichard, 1870.
Formatting: 8vo
Condition Report: Very Good. Bound in the publisher's original green pebble-grain cloth with bright, unoxidised gilt tooling to the spine and front board. The binding remains remarkably square, tight, and firm, presenting as an exceptional survival for a 19th-century travel guide. Externally, there is only trivial rubbing to the spine ends and corner tips, with the cloth remaining rich in colour and largely free from the scuffing or fading typical of heavily handled tourist guides. The text block edges are lightly and evenly toned. Internally, the hinges are sound. The folding index map at the front is present and intact, exhibiting some minor creasing to the protruding edges and a small, neat closed tear near the gutter attachment, which is standard for fold-out inclusions of this era. The pages and engraved frontispiece are generally clean and bright, displaying only occasional, faint instances of isolated foxing. Overall, a highly attractive and well-preserved copy.
Catalogue Note: An early, comprehensive edition of Black's famous and highly successful Picturesque Guide to Wales, published jointly in Edinburgh and Chester in 1870. As railway networks expanded across the British Isles during the Victorian era, Adam and Charles Black capitalised on the burgeoning middle-class tourism market, producing guides that became the standard for domestic travel and regional exploration.
This particular edition, covering North and South Wales as well as Monmouthshire, is distinguished by its beautifully preserved publisher's binding, complete with a gilt-stamped Welsh harp, a goat, and the Prince of Wales's feathers on the spine. It retains its folding frontispiece index map, regional charts, and the finely detailed steel-engraved view of Snowdon from Capel Curig by Montague Stanley. While later editions of Black's guides frequently surface, securing early, well-preserved copies in their original decorative cloth bindings, untampered and structurally sound, is increasingly uncommon on the open market, making this a lovely addition to any collection of 19th-century British topography and local history.
A classic Victorian travel companion, Blackβs Picturesque Guide to Wales provides a fascinating window into 19th-century British tourism. Packed with detailed itineraries, topographical descriptions, distance tables, and a dedicated Welsh vocabulary for English travellers, it was designed to lead the intrepid Victorian tourist through the rugged landscapes and historic towns of Wales. From the towering peaks of Snowdonia to the bustling coastal resorts and ancient castles, this comprehensively illustrated guide remains a charming and evocative testament to the golden age of railway travel and the romanticisation of the Welsh landscape.

Book Condition Guide
| Condition | Description |
|---|---|
| New | A brand-new, unread and professionally handled book. Carefully preserved from publication to purchase, these books are offered in the best attainable condition. This grade applies to recently published titles that have not entered long-term storage. |
| As New | The book is in pristine, original condition as if just published. No signs of use or handling. The dust jacket (if present) is equally flawless. This grade applies to any book that has remained untouched in storage for years. |
| Fine | The book is close to As New. It remains bright and attractive, but could show minor imperfections to the boards and/or dust jacket (if present). Its pages are typically clean and unmarked. |
| Near Fine | The book has a number of small flaws, i.e. slight rubbing to the edges, or tiny chips or creases to the dust jacket (if present). Its pages may have faint marks, or creases that are barely perceptible β nothing that detracts from their overall condition. |
| Very Good | The book maintains its structural integrity, and has no major flaws such as tears to its binding or pages. It may, however, show signs of careful use, handling, or storage β small marks and creases, light foxing. Its dust jacket (if present) remains fully intact, but small tears may be present. |
| Good | A book that remains intact and readable with complete text pages, but shows moderate signs of wear and use to both the book and dust jacket (if present). It may have noticeable creases, nicks, or stains, and the spine likely shows fading, bumping, and rubbing. There could be writing, underlining, and other marks on some pages, though the majority will be clean and tidy. |
| Fair | A book with significant wear or damage. The text pages will be complete, but there may be heavy underlining, highlighting and staining throughout, and the bookβs endpapers, half-title, and copyright pages could be damaged or missing. The binding could be loose, and the dust jacket (if present) may have notable scuffs or tears. These copies are usually of interest for content, signature(s) or scarcity. |
| Poor | A heavily worn book whose value lies in its complete and legible text. A poor book will have substantial defects β loose joints or hinges, detached covers, loose and/or missing pages, and could be heavily soiled. A poor book is also known as a reading copy, and although compromised, can hold historical or bibliographic significance. |
