Condition Report: Very Good. The publisher's original blind-stamped green cloth remains remarkably well-preserved, safely housed beneath a fitted protective plastic sleeve which accounts for the glossy surface reflections seen on the boards. The gilt titling and intricate scrollwork on the spine remain notably bright and unoxidised, avoiding the dulling typical of mid-nineteenth-century cloth bindings. There is only mild bumping and minor rubbing to the spine ends and corners. The binding is tight, square, and structurally sound. The text block edges display a uniform, age-appropriate toning. Internally, the engraved frontispiece and illustrated title page bear some mild, scattered foxing, but the primary text remains cleanly presented and supple throughout.

Catalogue Note: Second Edition, historically significant as the first single-volume edition in book form (having previously been serialised in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine and published as a three-volume triple-decker in 1844). This 1854 edition features a striking engraved frontispiece, a decorative engraved title page ("The Grave of Ellen Fairman"), and several further plates by the prominent Victorian illustrator William McConnell.

Written by Samuel Phillips (1814–1854), a well-known journalist, essayist, and literary critic for The Times, this novel initially marked his ascent from near destitution to literary prominence. Early editions of Phillips's works, particularly in their original, unrestored blind-stamped cloth bindings, are increasingly uncommon to find in such sturdy condition.

Initially serialized to great acclaim in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, Caleb Stukely is a gripping and atmospheric tale of the eighteenth century. The narrative follows the trials, moral tests, and adventures of its eponymous hero as he navigates a world fraught with shifting fortunes and shadowy characters.
