Condition Report Very Good. The publisher's original quarter black cloth over marbled paper boards remains tight and structurally sound, showing only mild shelf-wear and light bumping to the corners. The gilt lettering and pilgrim motif to the spine remain bright and unoxidised. The text block shows some light age-toning and faint foxing to the page edges, typical of the paper stock from this period, but the interior pages and margins are notably clean, crisp, and free from internal markings. The binding is firm with no cracked hinges, ensuring the illustrative plates and tipped-in ephemera remain perfectly secure.

Catalogue Note This is a second impression (reprinted 1939) of Gertrude Bone’s travelogue, initially published in 1938. The volume is wonderfully elevated by the inclusion of seventeen striking black-and-white plates and numerous chapter-head vignettes by her husband, the acclaimed Scottish draughtsman and etcher Sir Muirhead Bone.

What distinguishes this particular copy is its exceptional provenance. Tipped onto the half-title page is a presentation label inscribed and signed by both the author and the illustrator: "Signed for Miss Lucy Musker - Gertrude Bone, Muirhead Bone, with kind regards, Ap. 12 / ’39."

Furthermore, the book is accompanied by a charming collection of original ephemera, comprising a Christmas card and four Autograph Letters Signed (ALS), one penned by Gertrude Bone and three by Muirhead Bone. While standard copies of the 1939 reprint are common on the secondary market, a copy boasting such a rich, personal association with both the author and the esteemed illustrator is a genuine rarity.
