Condition Report: Very Good. The original publisher's brown cloth remains notably well-preserved, with the intricate blind-stamped paneled boards retaining their depth and definition. The spine, featuring delicate gilt ivy tooling alongside the title "German Love," is still bright and legible, showing only minor shelf-wear and light rubbing to the head and tail. Internally, the binding is tight, square, and structurally sound. The plain endpapers display some expected light toning and minor offsetting, but the text-block itself is clean and crisp throughout, free from any significant foxing, dampstaining, or tearing. A remarkably sharp and attractive copy of a fragile mid-Victorian cloth binding.

Catalogue Note: This is the scarce first English edition of Friedrich Max Müller's popular, anonymously published romantic novel, translated here as German Love: From the Papers of an Alien by Susanna Winkworth with the author's sanction. Originally written while Müller was establishing his academic career in Britain, the work provided him with vital financial support before he became a leading intellectual figure at Oxford University.

The volume is issued in its primary, unillustrated blind-stamped cloth binding. It bears the neat, contemporary ownership inscription of an "M. G. Redmond, March 1896" on the front free endpaper. Copies of this 1858 first edition are exceptionally scarce on the open market, particularly in such a well-preserved original state, as mid-century cloth bindings of this nature are highly prone to fading and structural deterioration.
