Condition

Very Good: Original cloth binding shows light general wear, with rubbing to edges and corners and along the spine. Spine remains bright. Small marks present across the boards, though gilt borders and lettering remain clear and crisp. Binding slightly cocked but firm. Internally, pages show occasional light foxing, but are otherwise clean and reasonably bright. A sound, presentable copy overall.

Description

Privately printed for subscribers only by The Walpole Press in 1899 (MDCCCXCIX), this is an inherently scarce late 19th-century work, seldom encountered in the trade due to its limited circulation. Subscriber-only publications typically had small print runs, making surviving copies increasingly difficult to source. The presence of original cloth binding with retained gilt adds to its appeal, particularly for collectors of obscure Victorian-era medical or social literature. A desirable and uncommon item for collectors of private press material and late 19th-century specialist works.

Kalogynomia is a late Victorian treatise that reflects contemporary ideas on health, beauty, and physical development, written from a medical perspective. The work explores prevailing theories of the time, combining scientific observation with social attitudes characteristic of the period. As such, it offers modern readers an insight into historical approaches to physiology and aesthetics.
