Condition Report: Good. The volume remains structurally sound but shows noticeable signs of age and wear to the exterior. The publisher's original blue cloth spine is heavily sunned, having faded to a muted tan, and exhibits bumping alongside minor fraying at both the head and tail. While the front board's gilt and green willow-style tooling remains relatively bright, the rear board is noticeably rubbed and scuffed. Internally, the binding holds firm. The pages are largely clean and tidy, though there is a previous owner's ink signature to the front endpaper, and one may expect the occasional minor crease or instance of light foxing typical of a book from this period.

Catalogue Note: This is the December 1905 second impression of Spielmann and Layard's definitive biography of Kate Greenaway, issued just two months after the first printing with "minor alterations" by the publisher, Adam and Charles Black.

The work is lavishly illustrated, featuring over fifty colour plates reproducing Greenaway’s beloved artwork, alongside dozens of black-and-white sketches. The title page also boasts a delicate vignette illustration of Lady Victoria Herbert's bookplate.

While early printings of this biography are reasonably available on the open market, they are frequently found in varying states of disrepair. Finding copies in the standard publisher's cloth that have escaped heavy spine fading is difficult, though this particular copy serves as a solid, functional example of this important reference work.
