Condition Report: Very Good. The binding remains remarkably tight and square, preserving the structural integrity of this nineteenth-century volume. The original brown cloth boards show only minimal wear, with slight bumping and very minor rubbing to the spine extremities and corners, none of which detracts from the book's overall handsome appearance. The blind-stamped textured pattern and gilt border on the boards remain distinct, while the central gilt motif on the rear board and the spine lettering retain a pleasing brightness with virtually no oxidation. Internally, the pages are generally clean, though some expected age-toning is present, particularly along the text block edges which have taken on a darkened hue. The hinges are sound, and the endpapers are secure, bearing a neat, contemporary ownership inscription in ink to the front free endpaper.

Catalogue Note: This is the Second Edition of Thomas Woolner’s celebrated Pre-Raphaelite poem, originally appearing as cantos in the January 1850 issue of The Germ, the short-lived periodical of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The poem underwent revision and expansion before being published as a standalone volume in 1863, with this second edition following closely after.

The volume is bound in an attractive publisher's cloth, featuring a striking blind-stamped texture and a central gilt motif on the rear board. The front free endpaper bears a neat contemporary ownership signature reading "A. Ireland. May 1864.", placing the book in the hands of an early reader within months of its release.

As the only sculptor formally associated with the original Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Woolner's literary contributions remain highly prized. Early editions of his magnum opus in such well-preserved original cloth are uncommonly encountered on the open market.
