Condition Report: Very Good. The binding remains tight and structurally sound, with the original light blue cloth displaying mild sunning and fading along the spine and the extremities of the boards. The black and gilt spine label is bright and fully legible, and the black cover vignette is sharp and unrubbed. Internally, the text block is clean and free of foxing, with only mild, uniform age-toning to the margins and edges. The original Masefield watercolour is vivid and unfaded, demonstrating excellent preservation. Lacks the original dust jacket.

Catalogue Note: This first edition is elevated significantly by an exceptional association: the front endpaper features an original pen and watercolour sketch of a two-masted sailing ship drawn by John Masefield himself. Beneath the artwork is Masefield’s handwritten presentation inscription to Nancy Eastwood, the respected manageress of Blackwell's Books in Oxford, dated Christmas 1950.

Masefield frequently adorned presentation copies for friends and prominent figures with these distinctive maritime vignettes. Copies boasting both an original Poet Laureate watercolour and such excellent book-trade provenance are uncommonly encountered on the open market, making this a superb addition to any serious collection of modern first editions.
