Condition Report: Very Good. The volume is tightly bound in a handsome contemporary full calf binding, which remains structurally sturdy despite some mild rubbing to the extremities and slight wear to the spine ends. The intricate gilt and blind tooling on the boards and spine remains bright and largely unoxidized, retaining much of its original elegance. The decorated edges of the text block are well-preserved, though slightly darkened with age. Internally, the hinges are sound and the text block is firm. The pages exhibit some moderate age-toning and localized foxing, most notably along the margins of the preliminary leaves and the title page, alongside faint historic moisture marks near the gutter. Early ownership inscriptions are present on the front endpapers in ink, but the text and the fine wood-engravings remain clean, legible, and well-preserved throughout.

Catalogue Note: This 1812 publication represents the first collected edition of Samuel Rogers' poetry. It brings together his highly acclaimed works, including The Pleasures of Memory, in a single, elegantly produced volume.

The work is beautifully illustrated throughout with sixty-four delicate wood-engraved vignettes, head-pieces, and tail-pieces. These engravings were masterfully cut by Luke Clennell, a prominent pupil of Thomas Bewick, based on original drawings by the renowned English painter and illustrator Thomas Stothard, R.A..

Adding a layer of historical interest, the front flyleaf bears the ink ownership signature of "W. W. Chynoweth Pope," alongside an early annotation in purple ink directing the reader to a review of Rogers' Poems in Sir James Mackintosh's Miscellaneous Works (1851). A further partial ownership inscription to the front pastedown adds to its provenance. First collected editions featuring these specific Stothard-Clennell illustrations are highly regarded by collectors of Romantic-era poetry and nineteenth-century book illustration.
