Condition Report: Near Fine. The dark blue cloth boards remain remarkably sharp and clean, with unbumped corners and striking, unoxidised gilt lettering to the spine. The binding is firmly tight, suggesting the book is largely unread and has been handled with care. Internally, the text block is bright and free of foxing, with crisp, clean pages throughout. The original photographic dust-jacket presents beautifully; it retains its vibrant, glossy finish, showing only the most trivial hints of shelf-wear along the top edge, and is free of any significant chips, tears, or fading to the distinctive typography. An unusually well-preserved, collector-grade example of this edition.

Catalogue Note: First UK Edition of Simenon’s 1933 roman dur (originally published in France as L'Âne Rouge), translated into English by Jean Stewart. This edition features the striking photographic dust-jacket designed by Beverly Lebarrow, with an author portrait by Jerry Bauer on the rear panel.

While Simenon’s Inspector Maigret titles were heavily printed and widely circulated, his standalone psychological novels from this era are considerably scarcer on the open market, particularly in such pristine, well-preserved condition.
