Condition Report: Very Good. The original red cloth boards remain generally firm and bright, with the silver-stamped scales of justice vignette to the upper board presenting cleanly with minimal oxidation. The spine is slightly sunned with a touch of trivial rubbing to the head and tail, though the silver lettering remains distinctly legible. The corners are sharp with only minor bumping. The top text-block edge retains a muted top-stain, while the fore and bottom edges show mild age-toning and a few small splash marks to the lower edge. Internally, the binding remains sound and tight. The pages are crisp and clean throughout, showing only faint uniform toning consistent with the paper stock of the era, and completely free from internal markings. A very presentable, sturdy copy.

Catalogue Note: This is a 1934 later printing of the First American Edition of Robert Hichens' celebrated legal thriller. The true first edition was issued in 1933 and bears the publisher's requisite "First Edition" statement on the copyright page; this 1934 issue lacks that statement, identifying it as a secondary printing. Issued unillustrated, it features the publisher's classic red cloth binding.

While true first printings in their original dust jackets are scarce, these early reprintings without jackets remain relatively common on the open market, offering an accessible contemporary reading copy of a classic title.
