Condition Report: Very Good. The two volumes have been handsomely rebound in modern quarter calf over marbled paper boards, ensuring a tight, secure binding free from weakness or cracking at the hinges. The leather spines present excellently, showing no significant shelf-wear or rubbing to the extremities, and the gilt ruling and lettering remain notably bright and unoxidised, avoiding the dullness often seen in older spine tooling. Internally, the text block boasts traditional untrimmed deckle edges. The pages show moderate, age-appropriate toning and scattered foxing, characteristic of the paper stock used in 1820, but remain remarkably clean and perfectly legible without any distracting internal damage or heavy soiling.

Catalogue Note: True first edition of Robert Anderson's collected poetical works, issued in 1820 from his hometown of Carlisle. The publication was driven by a subscription campaign designed to alleviate the poet's financial distress, successfully drawing over a thousand subscribers. Notably, the list of subscribers printed at the rear of the second volume features the names of William Wordsworth (whose poem "Lucy Gray" was directly influenced by Anderson's earlier work) and Robert Southey.

This two-volume set remains scarce on the open market, particularly as an uncut copy that preserves the original margins. Alongside his famous dialect ballads, this edition is highly valued for containing Anderson's own autobiographical essay, offering a vital firsthand account of a prominent English labouring-class poet.
