Condition Report: Good. The book remains structurally sound in its original publisher's bindings, though the exterior exhibits wear and damp-staining, particularly to the board faces which show prominent tidal marks. The paper-backed spines are darkened with some chipping to the extremities and slight loss to the original printed paper labels, though the bindings themselves remain relatively tight and completely unsophisticated. The text block is uncut with characteristic rough fore and bottom edges. Internally, the pages are generally clean, albeit with notable offsetting and ghosting to the title pages, and occasional scattered foxing and marginal age-toning typical of the period. There is a discrete previous ownership signature and a small contemporary bookseller's ticket to the front endpapers.

Catalogue Note: First English edition of Barthold Georg Niebuhr’s foundational work of modern historiography, translated from the German by F. A. Walter, an esteemed librarian at the British Museum.

The text was originally issued with folding maps, the presence of which is betrayed by the distinct offsetting of a map of Italy onto the blank leaf directly opposite the title page of the first volume.

The set features a quaint 19th-century bookseller's ticket from A. C. Baynes of Liverpool on the front pastedown, alongside a faint contemporary ownership signature. While the exterior boards have suffered from historical dampness, finding this important text entirely untrimmed and unsophisticated in its original drab boards and paper spines is increasingly scarce on the open market, as most extant copies were subsequently rebound by institutions or private collectors.

Barthold Georg Niebuhr's The Roman History fundamentally transformed the study of classical antiquity. Rather than accepting the myths and legends of early Rome at face value, Niebuhr applied rigorous source criticism to separate historical fact from poetic tradition. By analysing the sociopolitical conflicts between patricians and plebeians, and interrogating the ethnological origins of the Italian peoples, Niebuhr crafted a narrative that treated history not as a mere chronicle of events, but as a dynamic science of human institutions.
