Condition Report: Fine. A remarkably preserved copy approaching the condition of a new book. The ochre buckram binding remains exceptionally tight and completely free of shelf-wear or bumping to the extremities. The striking skull and geometric blocking to the front board and spine is entirely unrubbed and brilliantly unoxidised. The text block is perfectly square and firm, with the page edges remaining pristine and free of any foxing or handling marks. Internally, the Abbey Wove paper pages are remarkably bright, crisp, and completely unmarked, indicating the book has seen little to no use. The volume is housed in a similarly sharp, robust brown publisher's slipcase that exhibits no notable wear.

Catalogue Note: First printing of this edition of Nobel laureate Mario Vargas Llosa's historical masterpiece, originally published in Spanish by Seix Barral in 1981. The text was translated into English by Helen R. Lane.

The volume is beautifully bound in buckram by Lachenmaier of Reutlingen, Germany, and features specially commissioned colour illustrations alongside an intricately blocked binding design by artist Ben Cain. The text itself is elegantly set in Janson and printed on Abbey Wove paper by Memminger MedienCentrum AG in Memmingen, Germany. This specific issue is further elevated by a bespoke foreword written expressly for it by the author.

While not exceedingly rare on the open market, this beautiful production is highly sought after by collectors of modern literature, particularly as Vargas Llosa himself has frequently cited The War of the End of the World as his magnum opus.

What follows is a cataclysmic clash between the fanaticism of the marginalised and the brutal, modernising force of the state. Vargas Llosa weaves a sweeping, masterful narrative of passion, revolution, and the tragic consequences of ideological zealotry.
