Condition Report: Very Good. The binding remains remarkably tight and square, with the red cloth boards presenting brightly and the blue stamped lettering remaining unrubbed and sharply defined. The corners are sharp, and the spine ends show negligible bumping. Internally, the text block is clean and firmly bound, with only a very mild, uniform toning to the page edges commensurate with the wartime economy paper stock. No foxing or internal inscriptions are present. The original, unclipped dust jacket (priced 6s. net) is in Good+ condition. It retains strong, vibrant colours on the front panel but exhibits some chipping and minor loss to the head and tail of the spine, along with light creasing to the top edge and a small closed tear at the front flap hinge. The spine and rear panel show light surface dust-soiling and gentle tanning, typical for the vintage.

Catalogue Note: This is a 1944 Second Edition, issued in the same year as the true first printing. Produced under the strictures of the Book Production War Economy Standard, as proudly denoted by the authorised economy standard stamp on the copyright page, the survival of this volume in such sound condition is noteworthy. The book features a vibrant coloured frontispiece and numerous internal black-and-white line illustrations by Eileen Soper, whose artistic style became synonymous with Blyton’s work throughout the mid-20th century.
