Catalogue Note:This edition is part of the Imperial War Museum's Wartime Classics series. The author, David Piper (1918–1990), served with the Indian Army during the Second World War and was held as a Japanese prisoner of war for three years before his release in 1945. He later became a highly regarded art historian and director of several major museums, including the National Portrait Gallery, the Fitzwilliam Museum, and the Ashmolean Museum. The narrative draws heavily on his authentic, firsthand experiences in the Malayan campaign.
