Condition Report: Good. Bound in the publisher's original pictorial red cloth. The boards remain attractive, with the black illustrations and gilt titling to the front board and spine still reasonably bright, though the extremities exhibit mild rubbing and the spine ends show some softening and light creasing. The text block is generally tight, though the rear inner hinge is visibly starting with the underlying cloth mesh exposed. The fore and bottom edges of the text block are roughly trimmed and display typical age-toning. Internally, the pages are largely clean with only occasional light blemishes. The slate-blue foliate endpapers bear a neat, contemporary previous ownership signature to the front flyleaf, remaining otherwise unmarked in the public-facing areas.

Catalogue Note: This is the first one-volume English edition of Mark Twain's A Tramp Abroad, published by Chatto & Windus in 1880. It was issued in August of that year, shortly after the scarce two-volume first English edition of April 1880, making it the first accessible single-volume format of the work for the British market. As indicated by behind-the-scenes bibliographical notes, this variant features the publisher's extensive book catalogue bound at the rear, dated October 1880.

Profusely illustrated, the volume boasts three hundred and fourteen illustrations by W. Fr. Brown, True Williams, B. Day, and other artists, along with three or four humorous sketches purportedly executed by Twain himself. The book retains the publisher’s signature pictorial red cloth binding and decorative foliate endpapers. A contemporary ownership signature belonging to "M. F. Anderson" is cleanly inscribed on the preliminary blank. First one-volume editions in the original cloth remain uncommon on the open market, particularly those that have not undergone modern rebinding or invasive restoration.

A Tramp Abroad is Mark Twain's celebrated and semi-autobiographical travelogue detailing his journey through central and southern Europe alongside his friend Harris (a fictionalised version of his close friend Joseph Twichell).
