Condition Report: Very Good. Bound in attractive quarter-leather, this volume presents well despite some expected signs of age. The extremities show light wear, most notably minor bumping and small chip loss to the board corners, alongside a distinct area of surface loss to the marbled paper on the front board. The spine exhibits gentle surface scuffing but remains highly attractive, maintaining remarkably bright and unoxidised gilt tooling and lettering. The binding remains firmly square and tight. Internally, the contents display the scattered foxing typical for eighteenth-century paper stock, yet the pages remain broadly bright, crisp, and clean. There is a minor pen mark to the endpapers, though it does not detract from this structurally sound and aesthetically pleasing survival.

Catalogue Note: This Third Edition was issued anonymously, though it is definitively attributed to Ellis Cornelia Knight. Knight’s work serves as a fascinating lens into the late eighteenth-century appetite for moral philosophy and literary sequels, building directly upon the foundations laid by Samuel Johnson.

The volume is securely housed in a handsome quarter-calf binding with marbled paper boards, characteristic of late eighteenth- or early nineteenth-century craftsmanship.
