Condition Report: Good. The original paper-covered cartonnage boards remain firmly attached, presenting a charming, elaborate gilt and blue-stamped design that retains much of its original brightness. The extremities show expected signs of shelf-wear for a delicate mid-nineteenth-century binding, particularly rubbing to the spine ends, board edges, and bumped corners. The text block is tight and secure. Internally, the pages exhibit mild, scattered foxing typical with the age and paper stock, but remain supple and highly legible. The internal engravings are well-preserved, complementing the overall structural integrity of this surviving volume.

Catalogue Note: This mid-nineteenth-century French edition is presented in a classic cartonnage romantique binding, a highly decorative style of publisher's binding popular in France during this period, especially for children's prizes and gift books. The volume includes three fine engravings that illustrate the narrative.

This specific copy features a contemporary ink inscription on the front free endpaper: "The Prize for / French Conversation / merited by / Miss H. Jones / Midsummer 1858. / Barthomley -". Barthomley is a village in Cheshire, England, indicating the book's journey across the Channel to serve as an educational reward for a young student. While copies of Schmid's works are abundant, survival in original, unrestored cartonnage bindings on the open market is uncommon, as these fragile paper covers rarely withstood the rigors of childhood readership.
