Condition Report: Near Fine. The dark green cloth binding remains exceptionally tight and square, displaying no discernible shelf-wear or bumping to the corners, and the spine lettering remains bright and unrubbed. Internally, the hinges are solid and the pages are crisp and remarkably clean, completely devoid of previous ownership inscriptions or marginalia. The text block edges exhibit some mild age-toning and scattered light foxing, typical for the paper stock of this era, but this does not intrude upon the margins or affect the text. The unclipped dust wrapper, retaining the original 18s NET price, boasts vibrant, unfaded colours on the black and green cover art and spine, with merely a touch of light rubbing to the extreme spine tips and some very faint handling marks to the white rear panel. It is free from any tears, chips, or significant creasing, presenting beautifully in a protective archival sleeve.

Catalogue Note: This is the first UK edition, first impression, of J. R. Salamanca's celebrated psychological novel. It preceded the acclaimed 1964 film adaptation starring Jean Seberg and Warren Beatty.

The striking and ethereal dust wrapper artwork is provided by the prominent American surrealist Gray Foy. While copies of the true first American edition (Simon & Schuster, 1961) are relatively plentiful, this specific UK printing by Heinemann has become increasingly uncommon on the open market. It is particularly scarce when retaining its original dust wrapper in such an excellent, well-preserved state, free from the heavy edge-loss and fading that often plagues this title.

Set against the backdrop of a private psychiatric institution in Maryland, Lilith explores the complex and perilous relationship between Vincent Bruce, a young occupational therapist seeking purpose after his service in the Second World War, and Lilith Arthur, a captivating and highly intelligent patient diagnosed with schizophrenia. As Vincent is drawn deeper into Lilith's meticulously constructed, seductive fantasy world, complete with its own language, music, and mythology, the professional boundaries begin to blur.
