Condition Report: Poor. The red cloth binding is severely worn, with the spine exhibiting heavy chipping and material loss at the head and tail, accompanied by full splitting along both joints. While the front board's decorative gilt and black pictorial stamping remains relatively bright, the corners are heavily bumped and rubbed through to the underlying boards, and the rear board shows a notable water stain near the upper edge. Structurally, the book is highly compromised; the text block is effectively detached from the casing, and the inner hinges are completely split. A previous owner has attempted a crude, rudimentary repair along the inner gutter using old strips of printed German text waste (maculature), which obscures parts of the inner margin and further destabilises the structural integrity. The all-edges gilt is dulled but present. Internally, there is moderate foxing throughout the preliminary leaves and text block, alongside standard edge wear consistent with heavy juvenile readership.

Catalogue Note: This is the "Zweite Auflage" (Second Edition) of Märchenbuch by A. Godin, the pseudonym of the esteemed German writer Amélie Linz. Published by Carl Flemming in Glogau circa 1880, this volume is a wonderful example of late 19th-century German children's publishing. The work is profusely illustrated with 157 intricate woodcuts and four full-colour chromolithographic plates after original drawings by Otto Försterling, Gustav Süs, and Leopold Venus.

The volume features standard previous ownership provenance, bearing the name "Maud Inez Anderton" elegantly inscribed in ink on the half-title page. While earlier editions of Godin's fairy tales do appear in institutional collections, complete copies from this early print run, especially retaining their original decorative cloth bindings and vibrant chromolithographs, are scarce on the open market.
