Publication: London, Publicity Products, [c. 1950s]

Formatting: 4to, pp. 93.

Condition Report: Good. The book remains entirely intact and readable with complete text pages, showing the moderate wear expected of a heavily handled mid-century children's title. The illustrated yellow paper boards exhibit noticeable rubbing, surface scratches, and edge-wear, alongside some bumping and chipping to the corners. The quarter brown cloth spine is faded and frayed at both the head and tail, though the binding itself remains structurally sound, if slightly strained at the inner hinges from use. Internally, the pages are moderately toned, typical of the paper stock used during this era, and bear occasional handling marks and light smudges. While there is a small puncture mark visible on the front board and general external scuffing, the majority of the internal puzzles and illustration blocks, designed for a child to colour in, appear to remain clean and uncoloured, allowing the volume to maintain its vintage appeal despite its obvious signs of previous enjoyment.

Catalogue Note: This undated mid-century publication is a charming example of post-war British children's publishing, issued in a quarter cloth and illustrated board binding. While no specific edition is stated, its format and content, featuring references such as "Crete 1944" on the cover, suggest an early or original printing from the 1950s, a period when the publisher produced a flurry of similar interactive novelty titles.

The volume is profusely illustrated throughout with black-and-white line drawings, word games, and visual puzzles, such as the "Indian Animal Puzzle" and "A Hidden Word Puzzle," which were explicitly designed for children to colour in. Notably, the book lacks any significant inscriptions, bookplates, or binders' stamps, bearing only the standard hallmarks of previous ownership.

Surviving examples of this specific Colorix title are quite scarce to encounter on the open market today. As we prepare our latest antiquarian inventory here in the North of the UK, we find that because these books were designed to be actively consumed, coloured in, drawn over, and heavily handled by children, finding copies that have not been entirely scribbled in or destroyed over the decades is an uncommonly difficult task, making this a notable survivor for collectors of vintage children's ephemera.

Modern Heroes invites young readers on a thrilling visual adventure through post-war heroism and global exploration. Packed with intricate black-and-white illustrations, hidden word games, and engaging visual challenges like the "Indian Animal Puzzle," this interactive Colorix book was designed to spark the imagination. From soldiers in the dense foliage of Crete to sprawling international landscapes, it offers a nostalgic and hands-on glimpse into mid-century childhood entertainment, waiting to be discovered by a new generation of vintage enthusiasts.

Book Condition Guide

We stock thousands of books in a wide range of conditions. To make things clear and to help you know exactly what to expect, Please refer to these condition categories to understand the condition of the book you will receive.
Condition Description
New A brand-new, unread and professionally handled book. Carefully preserved from publication to purchase, these books are offered in the best attainable condition. This grade applies to recently published titles that have not entered long-term storage.
As New The book is in pristine, original condition as if just published. No signs of use or handling. The dust jacket (if present) is equally flawless. This grade applies to any book that has remained untouched in storage for years.
Fine The book is close to As New. It remains bright and attractive, but could show minor imperfections to the boards and/or dust jacket (if present). Its pages are typically clean and unmarked.
Near Fine The book has a number of small flaws, i.e. slight rubbing to the edges, or tiny chips or creases to the dust jacket (if present). Its pages may have faint marks, or creases that are barely perceptible — nothing that detracts from their overall condition.
Very Good The book maintains its structural integrity, and has no major flaws such as tears to its binding or pages. It may, however, show signs of careful use, handling, or storage — small marks and creases, light foxing. Its dust jacket (if present) remains fully intact, but small tears may be present.
Good A book that remains intact and readable with complete text pages, but shows moderate signs of wear and use to both the book and dust jacket (if present). It may have noticeable creases, nicks, or stains, and the spine likely shows fading, bumping, and rubbing. There could be writing, underlining, and other marks on some pages, though the majority will be clean and tidy.
Fair A book with significant wear or damage. The text pages will be complete, but there may be heavy underlining, highlighting and staining throughout, and the book’s endpapers, half-title, and copyright pages could be damaged or missing. The binding could be loose, and the dust jacket (if present) may have notable scuffs or tears. These copies are usually of interest for content, signature(s) or scarcity.
Poor A heavily worn book whose value lies in its complete and legible text. A poor book will have substantial defects — loose joints or hinges, detached covers, loose and/or missing pages, and could be heavily soiled. A poor book is also known as a reading copy, and although compromised, can hold historical or bibliographic significance.
