Condition Report: Very Good. The original red cloth binding remains remarkably bright and sharp, with the black tooling and monogram unrubbed and the spine completely un-sunned. The text block is square and tight; while the pages exhibit standard age-toning typical of wartime or immediate post-war paper stock, they remain clean and free from internal foxing or tearing. The top edge is lightly dust-soiled, and the fore-edge is roughly trimmed. The dust jacket presents well; it exhibits mild rubbing and surface soiling to the lighter panels, alongside minor nicks and light wear to the spine extremities and corners, but remains largely complete and highly attractive.

Catalogue Note: This mid-century reprint of Farnol's popular 1918 romance was issued as part of the publisher's uniform 'Romances of Mr. Jeffery Farnol' series. Dating this printing to circa 1944 is possible by examining the advertisements on the dust jacket's rear panel and the title page verso, which conclude with Murder by Nail (published in 1942) and The King Liveth (published in 1944).

While Farnol's later post-war titles, such as his 1949 first edition of The Fool Beloved, are generally less common yet often slow-moving on the secondary market, his earlier Regency romances like this one remain his most enduringly popular works. Unillustrated and retaining its attractive pictorial dust jacket bearing the unclipped '5/- NET' price, this edition serves as a handsome, accessible copy.
