Condition Report: Very Good. The original crimson cloth boards remain remarkably clean and structurally sound, with the gilt tooling to the front board and spine retaining much of its original brightness without significant oxidation. There is minor bumping and faint rubbing to the spine ends and corners, typical of late nineteenth-century cloth, but the binding remains square and tight with no splitting to the joints. Internally, the hinges are perfectly secure, and the pages are generally clean, displaying only light, natural age-toning to the preliminary leaves and endpapers, completely free of significant foxing or damp-staining.

Catalogue Note: This is a scarce first edition of Pink Diamonds: A Romance Without a Story, issued under the elaborate pseudonym McFaddyen O'Flatherty McGinnis. The name was a pen name used by Robert Blatchford, the prominent English socialist campaigner, journalist, and founding editor of The Clarion newspaper.

The volume features appealing provenance, retaining an illustrated bookplate for Charles Hill affixed to the front pastedown, alongside a neat, contemporary ink ownership inscription on the front free endpaper detailing Hill’s address at 72, Poulton Road, Seacombe, Cheshire. Copies of this work are notably scarce on the open market, particularly in this original and un-restored state.

An unorthodox foray into fiction by the celebrated socialist reformer Robert Blatchford, Pink Diamonds: A Romance Without a Story uses an intentionally convoluted pseudonym to present a narrative that gleefully defies the structural conventions of the Victorian romance.
