Condition Report: Very Good. Bound in handsome contemporary mottled calf, with the spine featuring neat gilt ruling and direct gilt titling. The binding remains tight and structurally sound, with the text block firmly secured. The boards present minor rubbing, edge-wear, and softening to the extremities commensurate with age, while the spine is exceptionally clean, suggesting a highly sympathetic, expert historic reback. Internally, the pages are largely crisp and bright, displaying only occasional, mild age-toning and marginal spotting that does not detract from the clarity of the woodcut illustrations. The endpapers remain intact, bearing a clean armorial bookplate to the front pastedown. 

Catalogue Note: A highly desirable First Edition of Rev. John Trusler’s moralizing work, famously illustrated by the celebrated wood-engraver John Bewick. The volume is complete with fifty striking woodcuts, comprising a fine frontispiece and forty-nine half-page vignettes that vividly capture scenes of eighteenth-century daily life. Furthermore, this copy retains the concluding advertisement leaf, which is frequently absent in comparable market examples. 

The volume carries charming provenance, featuring the distinguished armorial bookplate of Henry Elliot Graham, bearing the family motto Nec Timeo Nec Sperno affixed to the front pastedown. An early, contemporary ink ownership signature, appearing to read "N. Lyon," is neatly penned at the upper margin of the title page, adding a touch of historical character without intruding upon the text. Complete, early editions of this work retaining their contemporary bindings and the advertisement leaf have become notably scarce on the open market. 

Conceived as a sophisticated "Succession-Book to Aesop's Fables," Proverbs Exemplified marries the didactic philosophy of Rev. John Trusler with the masterful, dynamic wood-engravings of John Bewick. Through a series of familiar adages grounded in vivid scenarios of eighteenth-century existence, the work aims to instruct youth in morality and "a knowledge of the world". Bewick’s enchanting illustrations not only illuminate Trusler’s text but stand as a testament to the golden age of English wood-engraving, offering a captivating window into the social fabric of the era.

As New The book is in pristine, original condition as if just published. No signs of use or handling. The dust jacket (if present) is equally flawless. This grade applies to any book that has remained untouched in storage for years.
Fine The book is close to As New. It remains bright and attractive, but could show minor imperfections to the boards and/or dust jacket (if present). Its pages are typically clean and unmarked.
Near Fine The book has a number of small flaws, i.e. slight rubbing to the edges, or tiny chips or creases to the dust jacket (if present). Its pages may have faint marks, or creases that are barely perceptible — nothing that detracts from their overall condition.
Very Good The book maintains its structural integrity, and has no major flaws such as tears to its binding or pages. It may, however, show signs of careful use, handling, or storage — small marks and creases, light foxing. Its dust jacket (if present) remains fully intact, but small tears may be present.
Good A book that remains intact and readable with complete text pages, but shows moderate signs of wear and use to both the book and dust jacket (if present). It may have noticeable creases, nicks, or stains, and the spine likely shows fading, bumping, and rubbing. There could be writing, underlining, and other marks on some pages, though the majority will be clean and tidy.
Fair A book with significant wear or damage. The text pages will be complete, but there may be heavy underlining, highlighting and staining throughout, and the book’s endpapers, half-title, and copyright pages could be damaged or missing. The binding could be loose, and the dust jacket (if present) may have notable scuffs or tears. These copies are usually of interest for content, signature(s) or scarcity.
Poor A heavily worn book whose value lies in its complete and legible text.
