Condition Report Good. The original cloth binding remains fundamentally sound and square, holding a tight text block, though it exhibits external wear commensurate with its age and its intended colonial circulation. The spine is noticeably sun-faded compared to the deeper red of the front and rear boards, displaying minor rubbing and bruising to the head and tail, while the boards themselves remain relatively clean with only light handling marks. Internally, the hinges are uncracked and secure. The primary detraction lies in the preliminary leaves, most notably the blank verso facing the title page and the title page itself, which are compromised by a prominent, dark liquid stain to the lower inner margin, alongside moderate scattered foxing. The uncut page edges display typical age-toning and dust-darkening. Despite the aesthetic flaws of the preliminaries, the main body of the text remains clean, perfectly legible, and structurally secure, justifying the grade for a solid, utilitarian copy.

Catalogue Note This printing forms part of the acclaimed Longmans' Colonial Library series, explicitly produced "for circulation only in India and the British Colonies." While the standard UK domestic first edition of this title is frequently encountered on the open market, these colonial issues provide a fascinating and much scarcer glimpse into the mechanics of Victorian imperial publishing.

Issued simultaneously with, or very shortly after, the domestic first edition, the Colonial Library bindings were typically robust yet unadorned. They eschewed the elaborate pictorial gilt covers of their UK counterparts in favour of durable, standard-issue cloth designed to withstand challenging climates and long sea voyages. The present copy is bound in the series' traditional red cloth, featuring simple gilt spine titling and a small floral motif, representing a highly authentic piece of late nineteenth-century global book distribution.
