Formatting: Small oblong 4to, unpaginated [comprising decorative title, 12 text leaves, 12 plates, and [vii] advertisements].

Condition Report: Good. The original publisher’s brown decorative cloth binding remains remarkably bright and attractive, with the elaborate gilt and black block tooling retaining much of its visual appeal. There is expected rubbing to the extremities, minor bumping to the corners, and slight fraying at the spine ends. Internally, the volume is lacking both the front and rear free endpapers, leaving the inner hinges exposed but holding securely. The text block is generally clean throughout, though there is a small tear to plate 7 alongside a few minor handling marks and blemishes commensurate with age. Despite these internal faults, it remains a solid, highly presentable example of a scarce topographical work in its unrestored original binding.

Catalogue Note: This is a true first edition of Thomas Ashworth’s scarce topographical record, originally published in 1877.

The work is profusely illustrated with twenty individual sketches executed by Ashworth and presented across twelve plates, accompanied by a descriptive index by S. E. Gibbons. The handsome binding features the distinctive coats of arms for Manchester ("Concilio et Labore") and Salford ("Integrity and Industry") struck in gilt to the upper board.

Copies of this edition are notably scarce on the open market, particularly in the original decorative publisher's cloth without modern rebinding or institutional stamping.
