Condition Report: Very Good. The original fragile glassine wrapper remains intact, displaying only mild age-toning and minor chipping restricted to the spine extremities and corners, successfully preserving the underlying covers. The blue paper wrappers are remarkably bright and clean, with the gilt titling remaining bold and unoxidised. The binding is tight and square, showing no signs of leaning or separation. Internally, the text block is exceptionally crisp and entirely free of foxing, with the untrimmed fore and tail edges presenting beautifully. A highly attractive, well-preserved copy of this delicate wartime-era publication.

Catalogue Note: First Canadian Edition, published as part of the publisher's "Bibliothèque de Luxe" collection. During the Second World War and its immediate aftermath, numerous French literary classics were published in Canada to circumvent wartime printing restrictions in Europe and ensure their continued circulation. This handsome, unillustrated edition was printed in Montréal by Dussault et Péladeau in a limited run of 1,400 copies.

Surviving copies that retain their delicate original glassine wrappers are increasingly uncommon on the open market, particularly in such highly preserved condition.
