Condition Report Very Good. The publisher's full red leather binding remains tight and structurally sound, showing expected but moderate shelf-wear, including rubbing to the spine ends, board edges, and corners. The black blocked horizontal lines and gilt tooling on the boards remain distinct, and the Macmillan & Co. monogram on the front panel is clear. Internally, the binding holds firm with all edges gilt. Foxing is present throughout, particularly affecting the preliminary leaves, title page, and the margins of the text block. The original tissue guard to the frontispiece remains intact. Overall, a handsome, resilient copy of a scarce Victorian binding.

Catalogue Note This is the first edition of Charlotte M. Yonge’s historical crusader novel, presented in a handsome publisher's deluxe full leather binding, complete with the Macmillan & Co. monogram blind-stamped to the lower front board. The volume features all six original illustrations by R. Farren.

The front free endpaper bears a neat contemporary gift inscription reading, "Emma G. Holt with Aunt Sarah's love Janry 10th 1874." Complete first editions in this particular publisher's binding are scarce on the open market, particularly when retaining their structural integrity.
