Condition Report: Very Good. The full calf leather binding remains exceptionally tight and structurally sound, with the hinges holding firm. The smooth leather boards display minor surface scuffing and faint linear scratches to the front panel, typical of soft calfskin, but are completely free of any significant shelf-wear, bumping, or edge-loss. The spine is remarkably well-preserved; its raised bands are crisp, and the gilt tooling, title, and 1902 date remain bright and unoxidised. The gilt inner dentelles and the all-edges-gilt (a.e.g.) text block are highly reflective and unblemished. Internally, the endpapers are intact and clean, with a red silk ribbon marker present. A handsome, sturdy, and highly presentable copy.

Catalogue Note: This is the 1902 reprint of Lyall’s biography, originally published in 1889 as part of Macmillan's 'English Men of Action' series.

The volume is distinguished by an elegant full calf binding attributed to the Guild of Women-Binders. Founded in 1898 by Frank Karslake, the Guild was a pioneering and highly influential collective that provided training, employment, and exhibition spaces for female bookbinders during the Arts and Crafts movement. Bound in a rich, smooth tan calf with raised bands, a fully gilt-edged text block, and delicate gilt tooling to the inner turn-ins featuring a three-petal shamrock corner-piece, this book survives as a superb example of the era's craftsmanship.

Books bound by the Guild are increasingly scarce on the open market and remain highly prized by collectors of historical book bindings and women's history.
