The volume remains tight, square, and robust, with the original blue cloth boards displaying excellent preservation and no discernible shelf-wear or bumping to the extremities. The gilt tooling on the spine remains remarkably bright and unoxidised. Internally, the text block is clean and free of extraneous markings, exhibiting only the mild, uniform age-toning to the page margins and top edge that is standard for the publisher's paper stock of this era. The original, price-unclipped dust jacket retains its vivid colouration without sunning to the spine and shows only negligible surface rubbing.

Catalogue Note: The True First Edition of the author's ambitious debut novel, preceding the American edition published by Atheneum. This idiosyncratic volume is notably subtitled "A Cartoon" and includes original line drawings and illustrations provided by the author himself.

As a debut novel released by a British publisher prior to Vollmann establishing his significant cult following, the initial print run was relatively conservative.
